Creating the Perfect Fit: How a Denture Reline Works

Oral and facial changes are normal over time, and if you wear dentures, jawbone resorption can cause them to fit improperly and uncomfortably. Seeking replacement prosthetics is often not necessary, especially since dentists can reline your artificial teeth. If you’re unsure what this process involves and why it’s recommended, keep reading.

What Causes Dentures to Fit Poorly?

There are a few reasons why your dentures may no longer fit as comfortably as before; however, jawbone resorption is the most common.

When permanent teeth are firmly in place, they deliver continuous stimulation to the underlying bone so it will remain dense and supportive. Once you lose one or more teeth, though, this oral foundation will weaken over time if a new artificial tooth root is not put in its place.

Since dentures only sit on top of the gums, the resorption process continues, which means that changes to your mouth and face will occur, causing your prosthetics to no longer fit correctly.

What is a Denture Reline & How Does It Work?

When noticing a change in your denture fit, there’s a good chance your dentist will recommend a reline. This is the process of adding material to the portion of your prosthetic that sits flush with your gums. Not only does this create a more comfortable fit, but it also restores a level of comfort so that you can resume eating and speaking normally.

The type of reline you receive – soft or hard – will be based on preference and need.

A soft reline can be performed quickly and is often recommended if you are experiencing fast bone loss. Your dentist will conduct the process in their dental office and use a liquid polymer to ensure proper depth. This convenience is a significant benefit for most patients, as there is no need to wait to receive your relined denture from a dental lab.

Your dentist will perform a hard reline if you desire a more durable material. These treatments tend to last longer than soft relines and can be completed in your dentist’s office or a lab. Although you may spend less time having your denture fixed over the years, this type of reline may not be preferred if you have gum sensitivity.

Having your dentures relined can save you a lot of time and money; however, if you decide that you prefer an alternative option, you can always ask about dental implants. No matter what you choose, you have options when it comes to your smile and its future.
