4 Things Not to Do After Dental Implant Surgery

Dental implant surgery is a straightforward procedure that puts patients one step closer to enjoying life with a complete, functional smile. No matter how many new teeth are put in place or the type of restoration that is required, the results offer relief, confidence, and a better quality of life. But to experience these benefits, a patient must make sure they have a successful recovery. Here are four things a person should not do after dental implant surgery if they want to ensure a longer-lasting smile.

Smoking Should Be Avoided

During the initial consultation, the dentist will inquire about a person’s lifestyle habits. Although it is obvious to most dentists whether a patient smokes or uses tobacco, the recommendation to quit is likely to be discussed.

The reason is that smoking suppresses the immune system, making it harder to heal. This puts dental implants in jeopardy of being able to fuse with the jawbone. Without successful osseointegration, implants can fail.

Giving up the habit will ensure the greatest chance for one’s dental implants to properly fuse and deliver greater stability in the long run.

Sipping Through a Straw is Highly Discouraged

After dental implant surgery, blood clots will form over the surgical sites to help with the healing process. Choosing to sip or suck through a straw poses a risk, as the clots can become dislodged, resulting in dry sockets, which can be painful.

This is why a dentist will recommend that a patient avoid straws as well as swishing vigorously or spitting for several days.

Exercising Should Wait

Patients who are avid athletes or enjoy exercising may find it hard to follow this guideline, but it’s necessary for effective healing.

Strenuous exercise can cause additional bleeding around the implant sites because of an increased blood flow. It is advised that a person wait at least a week before engaging in any kind of physical activity. Rest is essential during this time and can make the healing process possible.

Eating Hard Foods is Not an Option

A dentist will likely recommend a soft food diet following dental implant surgery. The reason is that additional pressure applied to the surgical sites can cause additional bleeding and discomfort. This is why hot and hard foods are to be avoided in the days following the procedure.

Eating yogurt or warm soup allows the implants to heal more thoroughly. Only when a patient’s mouth feels more “normal” should solid food be reincorporated into their diet.

The longevity of dental implants is largely dependent on how well a person takes care of them. Starting the moment the procedure is complete, making the right decisions and following the dentist’s guidelines will give a patient the best chance to live life with a healthier, longer-lasting set of teeth.
